Arrival in Kyoto and our visit to the Higashi Honganji temple

Shinkansen journey was quite impressive, I made a short video to show how fast it went but it’s too big to be uploaded to flickr.

Once in Kyoto we had about an hour before we could check into our hotel so we had a little stroll to stretch our legs and the strollers wheels! About 10 minutes walking from our hotel is the Higashi Honganji temple also know as Eastern Temple of the Original Vow, which is one of the 2 dominant sub-sects of Shin Buddhism. Unfortunately there was some major restauration work happening so not many nice pictures to share.

Chouzuya. I think this one is quite spectacular with the dragon spout

Front of the main hall (temple) to give you an idea of size, the brown door ‘handles’ on the ricepaper doors are at the same height as a normal door handle.

This temple hall is also the worlds biggest wooden building. It’s quite impressive and the photo’s really don’t express how big it is

After this brief visit we went back to the hotel so The Smurg could have an afternoon nap

The details they put into buildings and decorative pieces just leaves me in awe! What wonderful things you’re seeing! 🙂
